Talk of the Town

I briefly mentioned this in the Chat Room, but wanted to expand a little here on my blog.  I read Lisa Wingate's Talk of the Town and just loved it.  She used a writing technique that was a bit outside the box, but she pulled it off completely.

First here's what it's about:

Television producer Mandalay Florentino just arrived in the tiny town of Daily, Texas, to arrange a "surprise" concert for American Megastar finalist Amber Amberson. Only it turns out everyone in town seems to know the secret. And paparazzi are arriving.  To make matters worse, it appears that Amber has disappeared with a "bad boy" Hollywood actor and might miss her own concert.  The townsfolk vacillate between protectiveness for one of their own and fascination in finding themselves at the center of a media maelstrom--with a young girl's future on the line.

The thing that makes this book so different is that Wingate tells the story in first person, but from two different people.  One chapter we see events unfolding from the producer's point of view.  In the next, events continue to unfold, but in the viewpoint of a fiesty old widow who is a local of Daily, Texas.

I wasn't sure how I was going to like flip-flopping between points-of-view when it was in first person, but it was amazing how smoothly the transition was.  And I loved seeing the action from such diverse viewpoints.

And, best of all, there was romance, intrigue and humor.  I think you girls will really like it.  So, next time you're out, pick up a copy then let me know what you think!

Valentine's Day

Greg & I are thinking about skipping Valentine's Day this year.  He just returned from Scotland and leaves for Africa in another few days.  We went out to dinner with a good buddy last night, our daughter has a soccer game tonight, we have Bible study tomorrow night, then soccer again on Friday night.  So, we both just want to, well, do nothing.

I'm sure flowers and chocolate will play a role, but beyond that, we just want to sit and chill.

That being the case, I'll have to live vicariously through you.  What are your plans?  Tell us about your special night.
